Man found guilty in Tulane officer's killing

According to investigators, John Shallerhorn shot Martinus Mitchum, 38, who was working security outside George Washington Carver High School.

NEW ORLEANS — John Shallerhorn was found guilty of the murder of a Tulane University police officer at a high school basketball game three years ago during the COVID pandemic.

According to investigators, Shallerhorn shot Martinus Mitchum, 38, who was working security outside George Washington Carver High School.

Authorities say Shallerhorn got into an altercation with a staff member, and when Mitchum went to intervene, Shallerhorn killed him.

The incident allegedly started due to Shallerhorn's refusal to wear a face covering inside the gymnasium during Phase II of a citywide mask mandate. At the time of the shooting, then-NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said police could not confirm the cause of the shooting as a mask issue.

Shallerhorn now faced first-degree murder and armed robbery charges.

Wednesday, Mitchum’s family made some brief comments during a break in the trial.

His brother, Darnell Mitchum, said they have been waiting three long years for justice.

“We’re here to get justice, whatever justice is, a life sentence. At least his family gets to visit him. We’re here with shirts on and starting non-profit foundations to keep his legacy alive.”

Mitchum’s mother said it’s difficult sitting in the courtroom, listening to details about her son’s murder.

“It’s very devastating,” Cassandra Mitchum said. “My heart hasn’t even healed yet. I’m just grieving and I’m praying and just trying to hold on. It’s terrible. No parent should have to bury their child.”

Authorities said just moments before Shallerhorn attempted to enter the high school, he robbed a man at gunpoint in the parking lot.

Mitchum was also a deputy constable with the Second City Court in Algiers.

Shallerhorn's sentencing is set for May 15th.
