Fourth suspect arrested in St. Bernard shootout

Sheriff James Pohlmann said a 1-year-old was almost shot when a bullet struck the child's car seat in the suspects' vehicle.

CHALMETTE, La. — UPDATE: 26-year-old Jesse Mondy is now in custody for his alleged role in a shootout in St. Bernard Parish, and for endangering the life of a 1-year-old.

According to the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office on Monday, three teen suspects were arrested in connection with a shootout in Chalmette over the weekend.

Suspects aged 15, 16 and 17 were all taken into custody while a fourth suspect, 26-year-old Jesse Mondy, is still at large.

An arrest warrant for Mondy, who lives in the 9100 block of Amour Drive in Chalmette, has been issued for principal to attempted second-degree murder and child endangerment.

Sheriff James Pohlmann said the incident occurred Saturday morning at approximately 11:45 a.m. in the 3500 block of Kings Drive. According to Real Time Crime Center footage from the area, investigators determined that a blue Jeep Compass driven by Mondy approached a male pedestrian walking along the road and opened fire.

Both the pedestrian and passengers in Mondy’s vehicle – later identified as the 15- and 16-year-old males involved in the case, drew weapons and exchanged gunfire. The Jeep was then seen fleeing the scene.

The SBSO claims several spent casings were found at the scene, but no suspects or victims.

Detectives said they discovered that the Jeep was also occupied by Hartzog and a 1-year-old child, who was allegedly almost shot when a bullet pierced the child’s car seat.

The Jeep was later recovered in the 9100 block of Amour Drive.

Details from the following arrests include:

  • A 15-year-old male juvenile from Chalmette has been booked with five counts of attempted second-degree murder.
  • A 16-year-old male juvenile from Chalmette has been booked with one count of attempted second-degree murder.
  • Marcus Hartzog, 17, of the 200 block of Coney Drive in Arabi, was booked with one count of principal to attempted second-degree murder.

Detectives said they also learned that the 15-year-old male is an acquaintance of the 16-year-old male and Hartzog, and the group has a history of prior conflicts.

Sheriff Pohlmann said the case remains under investigation.

Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Mondy, or with information relating to this incident is asked to call the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501, the Criminal Investigations Bureau’s tip hotline at (504) 271-TIPS or 8477, or Crimestoppers GNO at (504) 822-1111.
