NEW ORLEANS — A teenager accused of being involved in a deadly carjacking that got national attention was found competent to stand trial.
Briniyah Baker, 16, went through a mental competency hearing on Wednesday.
Prosecutors say Baker was one of the four teens who carjacked 73 -year-old Linda Frickey. They say the teens ordered Frickey out of her car, but she got tangled in the seatbelt. She was dragged for a block and died in the street from her injuries. Baker was 16 at the time of the incident.
Each of the four teens will be tried as an adult and are facing a mandatory life sentence if convicted.
Baker, along with John Honore, 17, Lenyra Theophile, 15, Mar'Qel Curtis, 15, were arrested by the New Orleans Police Department and charged with the crime. Honore, had a lengthy criminal record court records show.
In August, a judge denied bail reductions for the teens which kept them held in jail on a $1 million dollar bond.
The next court appearance for all four defendants is March 3 for a pre-trial hearing, followed by a trial on April 3.
