NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Police say they have arrested a 19-year-old who killed a homeless man during a beating and sexual assault that lasted several hours earlier this month.
The arrest affidavit for 19-year-old Joel Warren says, “…surveillance footage was obtained of the homicide, and the perpetrator sexually and physically assaulted the decedent for three hours before he succumbed to his injuries.”
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 60-year-old Marty Williams, listing his cause of death as blunt force injuries.
Police records say Williams was known to live on the streets in that area, which is surrounded by industrial warehouses.
A worker at one of the warehouses discovered Williams’ body in a rear driveway with no pants or shoes on and “a large amount of blood” around him.
Police initially listed his death as unclassified, but later changed it to a homicide.
The killing happened February 9 in the 700 block of North Galvez Street, according to a news release issued February 13, Mardi Gras Day, by the New Orleans Police Department.
At that time, detectives released surveillance footage of a person of interest in the case, who they later identified as Warren.
