'Targeted ambush' leaves 1 dead, 1 shot in Thibodaux

The shooting claimed the life of 19-year-old Thibodaux resident Saharold Holmes.

THIBODAUX, La. — Investigators have at least two persons of interest in connection to an early Sunday morning shooting that left one man dead and another injured at a Thibodaux subdivision, authorities said Monday.

The shooting claimed the life of 19-year-old Thibodaux resident Saharold Holmes. Another man suffered several gunshot wounds and was transported to a hospital, where he remained in stable condition, Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said.

As of Monday evening, no arrests had been made, Webre said.

“The officers have been getting a variety of leads,” the sheriff said. “Some of them have been generated on their own and others have come in through Crime Stoppers and social media. We have at least two persons of interest and we’re following up with those leads as well. We’re working with our investigative unit around the clock chasing different leads and are making good progress.”

The Lafourche Sheriff’s Office began receiving reports of shots fired around 2:15 a.m. Sunday, authorities said. Responding deputies found a car in the 400 block of Abby Road that had been struck by multiple gunshots.

After searching the area, deputies found Holmes lying in a field with at least one gunshot wound, the Sheriff’s Office said. He was later pronounced dead. The second victim was found nearby and was transported to a hospital.

At least one home was also struck by gunfire, but no injuries were reported, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators believe two other men were in the car, and they are being questioned, authorities said.

Holmes, a former Thibodaux High School football player, received a first-place award in 2017 at the Pro Football Camp at Nicholls State University.

Thibodaux Police had arrested Holmes along with four other suspects in connection with a shooting that left a man dead and other injured in October, authorities said.

Kevon Southall, 23, and Tyrick Hills, 19, were ultimately indicted in that case. Holmes’ charges were “pretermitted,” meaning more information was needed to fully investigate, prosecutors said.

Based on the evidence, Sunday’s shooting does not appear to be random, Webre said.

“It appears at this point to be a targeted ambush,” the sheriff said. “We can’t specifically identify who would have been the intended victim, whether it was the deceased or one of the other passengers, but based upon the location and method of the shooting, the responsible person or persons targeted one or more people.”

Detectives are encouraging residents in the immediate and surrounding areas to check their homes for possible damage from stray rounds. Residents are asked to report such findings to the Sheriff’s Office by calling 532-2808.

Anyone with any information is asked to submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers Bayou Region by calling 1-800-743-7433 or going online at crimestoppersbr.org. Tips can also be submitted using the P3 Tips app on your mobile device. Tipsters could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if the information leads to an arrest.
