Tangipahoa Parish deputy shoots and kills man while serving protective custody order

TANGIPAHOA, La. — A Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 20-year-old man in Ponchatoula Monday evening.

Louisiana State Police say TPSO has requested them to assist with the investigation.

The initial investigation revealed that Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a call at a home in the 14000 block of Madison Lane.

According to Louisiana State Police, while the deputies attempted to serve an Order of Protective Custody, they made contact with 20-year-old Warren Burton of Ponchatoula.

They say during the encounter, Burton allegedly armed himself with a firearm.

While negotiating with Burton to put the gun down, investigators say he allegedly pointed the firearm toward the deputies. One deputy fired his weapon, striking fatally Burton.
