SWAT standoff ends peacefully after two hours

NEW ORLEANS -- A police standoff in New Orleans East ended peacefully.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, an unidentified man was seen walking near the Lakewind East apartment complex carrying a rifle. Police said shots were fired, after a police officer spotted the man, but no one was injured.

The armed man then barricaded himself in an apartment with three other people inside. A SWAT unit was then deployed to the scene in the 5100 block of Bundy Road.

Hours later, all four people inside the apartment surrendered to police. The man armed with an assault rifle was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer. Police say he is currently booked as a John Doe because he provided officers with multiple false names. His true identity will be determined through fingerprints.

The three other people were all taken in for questioning and later released according to NOPD.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the NOPD's Public Integrity Bureau at 504-658-6800.
