STPSO: Deputies find fake fentanyl pills in brake cleaner container during traffic stop

About 1,000 fentanyl pills were found after St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputies stopped a stolen vehicle near Abita Springs over the weekend.

ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. — The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office says they took about 1,000 fake fentanyl pills off the streets during a traffic stop over the weekend.

Deputies were patrolling near the Abita Nursery Subdivision on Sunday when they stopped a 2006 Cadillac CTS reported stolen out of Pearl River County, Mississippi.

The driver was identified as James Spike, and his passenger was identified as Emelda Matthews. Both reside in Washington Parish.

According to STPSO, deputies found a brake cleaner aluminum container with a false bottom in the vehicle. About 1,000 fake fentanyl pills were in the container. 

“Fentanyl is a very dangerous drug, and it is no secret that it is in our community,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “Thanks to some alert deputies and proactive policing, a large quantity of this deadly drug was taken off our streets and a stolen vehicle was recovered.”


Spikes and Matthews were arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center. 

Spikes was charged with the following: 

  • Illegal Possession of Stolen Things
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute Schedule II CDS
  • Drug Paraphernalia

Matthews was charged with the following:

  • Illegal Possession of Stolen Things
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute Schedule II CDS
  • Drug Paraphernalia
  • Resisting an officer by refusing to identify
