COVINGTON, La. — Two women are dead after a head-on crash in Covington Tuesday morning, according to the Louisiana State Police.

The crash claimed the lives of 67-year-old Jeanna Dysart of Abita Springs and 29-year-old Samantha Gaines of Pearl River. State police said the crash happened around 6:45 a.m. on LA Hwy 36 near Kipp Road in St. Tammany Parish.

They said Dysart was driving a 2019 Honda Fit going eastbound. At the same time, Gaines was driving a 2020 GMC Acadia going westbound when Dysart crossed the centerline and struck Gaines head-on, Troopers said.

Dysart was not wearing a seatbelt and died on the scene. State police said they were unsure if Gaines was wearing a seatbelt, but she was also pronounced dead on the scene.

A child was in the car with Gaines and was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. They "sustained moderate injuries", a release said.

A passing motorist witnessed the crash and helped the child before they were taken to a nearby hospital.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis.
