Sanitation worker killed in crash on Lee Road in Covington, LSP confirms

A sanitation truck worker was killed in a crash on Lee Road in Covington, St. Tammany Parish. The driver of a vehicle that struck the truck also suffered injuries.

COVINGTON, La. — A sanitation truck worker was killed in a vehicle crash in St. Tammany Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

The crash happened around 6:00 a.m. Friday on Lee Road in Covington. 

At the time, the crash had closed Lee Road from Tammany Avenue to the south entrance of Hwy 1081/Stafford Road for about two hours but has since reopened.

According to Troop L spokesperson Mark Gremillion, the garbage truck was stopped and the driver of a vehicle allegedly failed to slow down and crashed into the truck which fatally injured a “hopper” sanitation worker who died at the hospital. LSP spokesperson says the Winget's Disposal truck worker was pinned to the rear of the garbage truck.

State Police have not released the name of the worker killed in the crash.

The driver of the vehicle, who State Police also have not released the name, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital. LSP says the driver will face charges.
