JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — A jury has been selected in the trial of two former Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies accused of shooting and killing a man who sat in an SUV and engaged in a confrontation with deputies in Marrero in 2022 as our partners at The Times-Picayune report.
Johnathon Louis, 37, and Isaac Hughes, 31, face a maximum of 40 years in prison if convicted of manslaughter for the deadly use of force that led to Daniel Vallee’s death.
In February 2022, Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said the two deputies were part of a group of five that surrounded Vallee's car while responding to a 911 call about a noise complaint in the 500 block of Wilson Street.
The sheriff said officers pleaded with Vallee to get out of his car, and at some point, Vallee dropped his hands, causing the vehicle's horn to honk, which Lopinto said startled the deputies who reacted with force.
Vallee’s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
Our partners at the newspaper report that on Monday relatives of Hughes and Louis were in the courtroom as the 24th Judicial District Court judge awaited jury selection. The men were both out on a $150,000 bond. The family of the victim was not in the courtroom, the paper reports.
