3 people arrested in Canal Street shooting, NOPD searches for fourth suspect

The shooting happened Monday, March 18 at a very busy corner of Canal Street which is often populated by tourists.

NEW ORLEANS — Three people were arrested in the New Orleans Police Department investigation of a shooting on Canal Street at Royal Street while police continue to search for a fourth suspect still on the run.

The shooting happened Monday, March 18 at a very busy corner of Canal Street which is often populated by tourists.

According to the NOPD, the victim, a 24-year-old man, was standing on the corner when a black SUV drove up and someone inside began shooting at the victim, striking him in the leg. He was transported by EMS to the hospital.

NOPD said through the investigation, detectives identified three subjects believed to have been in the vehicle during the shooting, Kevion Thigpen, Zykia Smith, and Tacoria Brown. All three have been arrested.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a fourth suspect, Maurice Dotson, believed to be the shooter. Detectives are searching for Dotson.

He is wanted on charges of attempted second-degree homicide by drive-by shooting, illegal discharge of a firearm, felon in possession of a firearm, and obstruction of justice.
