Orleans Parish inmate with terminal illness dies in hospice care at UMC

Jodi Sonnier died in hospice care just two months before her murder trial.

NEW ORLEANS — A terminally ill inmate at the Orleans Justice Center has died just two months before her murder trial was set to begin.

Jodi Sonnier, 49, was a detainee at the OJC and was awaiting trial for 2nd-degree murder which was delayed twice before a final date was set for November 18, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff’s office reports that on Monday, September 2, she was transported to University Medical Center and admitted to hospice care.

As her end-of-life treatment began, OPSO allowed the immediate family visitation at the University Medical Center on Wednesday. Sonnier eventually died from her illness Saturday morning.

“Sheriff Hutson and OPSO Leadership would like to express our gratitude to Director Jeremy Landry and Miss Cinnamon Tucker, DMP, APRN, for their support,” said an Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

“We also extend our thanks to all University Medical Center security staff, under the leadership of Chief Thomas Freeman and Deputy Chief Kevin Dotson for assisting OPSO with this endeavor and for their continued support.”
