OPCD demonstrated how dispatchers categorize and respond to 911 calls

Orleans Parish Communication District Interim Director Karl Fasold talks to media Friday about OPCD’s protocols for call taking and dispatching info.

NEW ORLEANS — Orleans Parish Communication District Interim Director Karl Fasold talked to media Friday about OPCD’s protocols for call taking, and how that information is dispatched to NOPD, NOFD, NOEMS, SPCA and MCIU and how the priority of the incident is assigned.

The press demonstration comes after questions about the 911 emergency call center’s response times during domestic violence situations.

The interim executive director says if a domestic violence call comes in, the first question they ask is if the perpetrator is still there.

He went on to say the call system is based on science and not human emotion.

“It's based on science and not human emotion. Sure, it is the comments still go into the call, as they do on any call as to what the caller is telling people and anything that our people observe here, etc. The science is into determining what it is who needs to go what the response needs to be. But the people are still involved," Fasold said.

Also in attendance at the press conference were:

  • John Thomas, Director of Public Safety and Homeland Security
  • Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, NOPD
  • Superintendent Roman Nelson, NOFD
  • Chief Bill Salmeron, NOEMS
  • Dr. Meg Marino, NOEMS
  • Tenisha Stevens, Criminal Justice Commissioner
