Former OPSO recruit sentenced for smuggling contraband into Orleans Justice Center

Elexis Gardner, who was hired as a deputy recruit at OPSO in August 2022, was sentenced in Criminal District Court Section I on Thursday, Nov. 9.

NEW ORLEANS — A former Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office recruit was sentenced to three years of probation last week after pleading guilty to charges related to smuggling contraband into the Orleans Justice Center.

Elexis Gardner was arrested in June for introduction of contraband into a penal institution, malfeasance in office and possession with intent to distribute after 17 packets of 12mg Suboxone Film, typically a drug used to treat opioid disorder, were discovered.

Gardner, who was hired as a deputy recruit at OPSO in August 2022, was sentenced in Criminal District Court Section I on Thursday, Nov. 9.

“We pride ourselves on hiring professional and qualified talent at the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, and we expect them to perform their duties with honesty and integrity at all times,” Sheriff Susan Hutson said.

“While I am disappointed by this recruit’s actions, I am proud of our detectives who worked diligently on this investigation to ensure we are holding ourselves accountable.”
