Two OPSO deputies suspended for bringing drugs into jail

According to OPSO, in May of 2024, deputy Thomya Bryant admitted to passing contraband to an inmate when questioned by OPSO investigators.

NEW ORLEANS — The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office says two deputies, a former deputy, and a man currently in custody at the Orleans Justice Center have been charged in connection with a conspiracy to introduce contraband into the OJC.

According to OPSO, in May of 2024, deputy Thomya Bryant admitted to passing contraband to an inmate when questioned by OPSO investigators.

Investigators also discovered that Deputy Giona Gibson planned to bring ten hollow ink pens containing suboxone strips into the facility in April, but she backed out. OPSO said Bryant's contraband consisted of approximately four hollow ink pens containing suboxone strips valued at approximately $500.

Gibson and Bryant have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Gibson is charged with criminal conspiracy, malfeasance in office, and compounding a felony. Bryant is charged with introduction of contraband into a correctional facility and malfeasance in office.

Former deputy Dymond Smith, who was fired in 2023 for disciplinary infractions, is charged with public bribery and criminal conspiracy for her role in providing the drugs.

Kevin Ratliff, who is currently in custody at OJC, will face additional charges of criminal conspiracy and public bribery.
