Officer fires at armed suspect on the scene of Seventh Ward shooting

The New Orleans Police Department say an officer fired on an armed suspect when responding to a shooting in the 2000 block of North Dorgenois Street on Friday.

NEW ORLEANS — Editor's note: NOPD originally reported that responding officers were fired upon by an armed suspect, however additional information reveals that while a gun was brandished toward an officer, it was the officer that opened fire and not the suspect.

The New Orleans Police Department say an officer was forced to fire on an armed suspect when responding to a shooting in the 2000 block of North Dorgenois Street on Friday.

According to the NOPD, at1:27 p.m. police were called to investigate an incident at the Seventh Ward location involving a female gunshot victim.

Chief Deputy Supt. Hans Ganthier told media that upon arrival an officer saw the suspect was armed and asked him to drop his weapon and surrender.

The suspect then turned his weapon toward an arresting officer, who then fired three shots in defense. 

Officers identified the suspect as 29-year-old Taylor Berry.

The suspect is not believed to have discharged his firearm and neither he nor any officers were struck by gunfire in this incident.

Shortly afterward the suspect was placed into custody.

The victim, who was shot in the head, was transported from the scene via Emergency Medical Service to a hospital and is listed in critical condition..

No further injuries were reported in this incident.
