Cops respond to a domestic battery incident in Mid-City, officer shoots armed suspect

It happened as officers were responding to a domestic battery call shortly after 11:00 p.m. Saturday, in the 3200 block of Bienville Street.

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Police Department's Public Integrity Bureau Force Investigation Team is investigating after an NOPD officer shoots a man they say opened fire on the officer.

It happened as officers were responding to a domestic battery call shortly after 11:00 p.m. Saturday, in the 3200 block of Bienville Street.

According to investigators, when officers arrived on the scene, 29-year-old Justin Martin had a gun and officers ordered him to drop the weapon. He did not comply and opened fire on them according to an NOPD report.

One officer returned fire, striking Martin. A responding officer who is an Emergency Medical Responder provided immediate life-saving aid to Martin until EMS arrived and transported him to a local hospital for further treatment.

Martin is currently listed in stable condition. No officers were injured in this incident.

Martin is in custody and being charged with Domestic Battery, Aggravated Assault against a Peace Officer, and Resisting Arrest.

The Independent Police Monitor and the Federal Monitor were on the scene to oversee and monitor the investigation.
