NEW ORLEANS — A man was shot dead in the Warehouse District Sunday, just two blocks away from the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
The shooting happened around 1 a.m., when hundreds were gathered, walking to and from the local bars and clubs.
Many had just left the Super Dome for festival performances.
Then, Violence marred the backend of Essence Festival weekend as locals and tourists indulged in the city’s nightlife
Monday, WWL Louisiana went to Boland Marine, a mechanic shop at the corner of Andrew Higgins Drive and Tchoupitoulas Street. The owner shared with me surveillance video of the Monday morning fatal shooting.
The video captures two people scuffling near a white car and a dark SUV. Then, one person takes off. Not far behind, the other person is behind to chase before stopping at the sidewalk, pulling out a gun, and firing. The shooter then gets into the dark SUV and drives away, heading down Annunciation Street.
Minutes later, multiple police cars and flashing lights surrounded the area.
It’s unknown at this time how many shots were fired.
NOPD says the victim of the shooting died at the scene.
City leaders expressed concerns about people trying to enjoy the festival weekend.
"Obviously, we’re always watching to see what happens. You hate to see how close it is to the festivities that are in the city,” New Orleans City Council member Joe Giarrusso said.
The investigation is still ongoing.
