NEW ORLEANS — Multiple WWL-TV sources say the FBI and the ATF teamed with NOPD to make two arrests, one considered a suspect in the back-to-back carjackings and the second considered an affiliated and/or an accomplice.
Sources say they're being held by federal agents as the investigation continues.
The DA's office has been briefed.
Monday night, Williams was defenseless as carjackers had a gun towards him and with his 78-year-old mother inside of the vehicle they wanted.
On audio obtained by WWL-TV, you can hear Williams imploring the carjackers to let him get his mother out of the vehicle before they took off. He and his mother were physically unharmed.
“They kept repeating get out of the car, get out of the car,” Williams said. “I said okay, put my hands up, two guns, I’m not going to fight anybody. But I said I can’t until I get my mom out of the car.”
Williams called 911 once they were a safe distance away from the carjackers.
Rafael Goyeneche with the Metropolitan Crime Commission believes Williams will recuse himself from prosecuting this case. He says the case will be referred to the Attorney General's office if that happens.
Goyeneche said, "If the Attorney General's office decides to accept charges, then the case will be allotted to either criminal district court or juvenile court, depending on the age of the perpetrators and I would suspect that the judge that is assigned that case in either court will either recuse themselves since the DA is responsible for prosecuting all cases before that court so I would expect that the Supreme Court would appoint an ad hoc to hear this particular case."
