NEW ORLEANS — A New Orleans couple, who have found a new way to bring the Carnival spirit to people, woke up to a big mess, and disappointment this morning outside of their Tremé home.
They are the couple who brought king cake pop-up drive-thrus to Metairie, and they had to scramble to restock for today's drive-through on the Gulf Coast.
Several days ago we showed you the successful idea Tiffany Langlinais and her fiancé Mike had, to sell many different brands of king cake in a pop-up drive-thru on Metairie Road. They make runs to bakeries all over the area late at night, and well before sunlight. So, Tuesday around 3 a.m. when Mike went to their van to start his workday he found shattered glass.
“What I thought was very much a nightmare, ended up being very much reality,” said Tiffany Langlinais.
The driver's window was smashed sometime between midnight and 3. Even though a considerate neighbor swept up the broken glass, bits and pieces still remained. More than 100 boxes of king cakes and personal items were gone.
“Two winter coats that he has got stolen, and you know they probably need it more than Mike. He's pretty sad about it. We have called police and no one has called or shown up yet and that was earlier this morning.”
WWL Louisiana turned to neighbors for video, hoping to catch a car loading them up. One neighbor found video of a man walking down with street with a stack of king cake boxes, though police have not told us if he is connected to the case.
Now, upset people on Tiffany's social media, are sending out a supportive warning.
“Don't buy your king cakes from any other drive-thru or pop-up, other than the actual bakeries,” she said the posts ask.
The king cake drive-thru in the 1000 block of Metairie Road, is Friday through Sunday until Mardi Gras.
There are king cakes from small startups, to names that have been around for 75 years.
The drive-thru opens at 7 a.m.
They are supposed to close at 7 p.m., but they are usually sold out before.
