Former N.O. teacher accused of helping juvenile escapee has case delayed

The new trial date is Nov. 18. If convicted Angela Filardo, faces up to six months in prison.

NEW ORLEANS — The woman accused of helping a juvenile escapee will not stand trial in New Orleans next week. That's because the case is being moved to another parish.

Angela Filardo was expected to begin her trial on Monday in a New Orleans courtroom. The former teacher is accused of helping 19-year-old Lynell Reynolds, her former student, flee to Texas after the teen escaped from a Lake Charles halfway house.

Last year, authorities tracked Reynolds through his phone, finding nearly 100 communications between the duo. Detectives report she drove him to Texas and dropped him off in Houston. Filardo was then booked on one count of accessory to simple escape.

She was released from Calcasieu Parish jail after posting a cash bond of $100,000, records show.

At the time of his escape, Reynolds was about to be released after serving time for shooting and paralyzing a man during a robbery.

Court dockets reveal that Orleans Parish will no longer prosecute Filardo as the case was handed over to Calcasieu Parish, where she is also charged. That's also the parish where Reynolds just got the maximum five years in prison for the escape.

Her new trial date is Nov. 18. If convicted Filardo faces up to six months in prison.
