Security guard shoots man for stabbing woman in wheelchair, police say

Through further investigation, NOPD detectives determined the man attacked the woman unprovoked and repeatedly stabbed her.

NEW ORLEANS — A man was shot and killed by a security guard after stabbing a woman in a wheelchair in the 7th Ward on Sunday, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

The shooting happened before 4 p.m. when NOPD was alerted of a stabbing in the 1100 block of Elysian Fields Avenue.

When officers arrived they found a woman "in a wheelchair with multiple stab wounds" and an unresponsive man with a gunshot wound on the sidewalk, the release said.

Through further investigation, detectives determined the man attacked the woman unprovoked and repeatedly stabbed her.

NOPD said a security guard from a business nearby shot the man once, to stop him from attacking the woman.

Officers said the man died on the scene. The woman was taken to a hospital for her injuries.

The security guard was detained for questioning and later released.

NOPD is asking drivers to avoid the area around the intersection of Elysian Fields and St. Claude during this investigation.
