NEW ORLEANS — Violent crime has been down in the first half of 2023, according to NOPD officials.
On Friday, Superintendent Michelle Woodfork said the overall violent crime was down 17% in New Orleans.
According to NOPD Homicides, non-fatal shootings, car jackings and armed robberies are also all down from this time last year.
The department also said had been cracking down on guns in a bigger way, saying they have made more gun arrests and confiscations this year.
Chief Woodfork said she believes the reductions are thanks to a collaborative effort by the department.
Although the chief added that there were other areas where numbers have been worse this year.
According to Woodfork, auto thefts have increased amid a national trend of breaking into and stealing Hyundais and Kias.
The NOPD has planned a full mid-year report for Friday evening.
