NEW ORLEANS — A woman was arrested after a New Orleans EMS ambulance was stolen on Tuesday evening, according to authorities. The vehicle was stolen while the EMS crew cared for a patient in the back of the unit.
The incident happened at 6:52 p.m. when emergency personnel got a medical call at the Ozanam Inn in the 2200 block of Poydras Street.
NOPD said while paramedics were treating a patient in the back of the ambulance, a woman got in the front seat and drove away with EMS personnel still inside, a release said.
"The vehicle was later stopped at N. Broad St and AP Tureaud Ave. There were no reports of injuries," the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services said in a statement.
They said the patient was transferred to another ambulance. The suspect was taken into custody by the New Orleans Police Department, she was then taken to University Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.
Officers said warrants are "being pursued for simple kidnapping and various traffic offenses."
The stolen ambulance and another EMS unit were damaged during the incident.
