Verbal argument leads to double shooting in French Quarter, police say

According to NOPD, what started as an argument near St. Ann and Royal Streets ended with two men, 30 and 35, shot.

NEW ORLEANS — Just after midnight, Tom Sanders says he woke up to gunshots.

“It sounded like really loud pops with an echo,” French Quarter resident Tom Sanders said.

When he walked outside, he says he saw a man lying on the ground just steps away from his front door.

“There were people with him who were upset. They seemed younger. One was crying and walking around in circles,” Sanders said.

According to NOPD, what started as an argument near St. Ann and Royal Streets ended with two men, 30 and 35, shot.

Around 12:30 Sunday morning, officers say the suspect fired multiple shots at the men before taking off.

NOPD says at least one of the victims was taken to the hospital. As of Sunday night, they didn’t have an update on their condition.

“I heard commotion and someone scream, and that’s when I thought something was really going on,” Sanders said.

Just two blocks away from the commotion, Earth Cam footage shows Bourbon Street packed with partiers.

“It’s sad and a little ridiculous that the quarter can suddenly be so dangerous,” Sanders said.

According to a Metropolitan Crime Commission Crime Map, five people have been shot and killed in the Quarter just this year.

Sanders says it’s something he never thought he would see on his block.

“It’s not like it’s an area filled with people hiding behind cars waiting to jump on you. It’s a nice area,” Sanders.
