Sophie Wright student fatally shot near Evans Playground Uptown Monday; man injured

Police said EMS was on the scene to transport the victim to the hospital but he was pronounced dead before he could be taken for treatment.

NEW ORLEANS — A 15-year-old Sophie Wright student was shot and killed and a 25-year-old man was injured during a football practice near Evans Playground on Soniat Street Monday evening, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

NOPD spokesperson Reese Harper said that it appears that the 25-year-old victim was the intended target.

Neighbors also tell us one of his coaches may have been the intended target of the shooting.

Both victims were rushed to the hospital. However, the teen did not survive his injuries. The adult victim is said to be stable. 

The homicide department is in charge of the investigation and is attempting to determine a motive and suspects in the case.
