NEW ORLEANS — A robber broke into the Bittersweet Confections bakery Wednesday night and before walking out with cash and alcohol, he decided to grab a handful of king cakes, police say.
Officers said they believed the man entered the shop through a side door, "took several cakes" and left out the same way, leaving with a "stack of king cakes, a case of Tito's vodka and some cash."
Our partners at Nola.com spoke to the owner, Cheryl Scripter, who said the manager of her building called around 6 p.m. and said "a man in a hoodie and a surgical mask " was seen leaving Scripter's bakery with as many king cakes as he could grab.
Scripter said her bakery closes every day at 2 p.m. and other employees couldn't have been around. She check her surveillance cameras to find a man wandering around her store about 20 minutes.
"I would prefer a more traditional route," she said. We're happy to sell people king cakes. We would prefer that," she told Nola.com.
Scripter said she was flattered that someone would go to the extreme just to have a taste of her king cakes.
Bittersweet Confections is open Tuesday-Saturday from 7: 30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
NOPD said they are still investigating the incident.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact detectives at (504) 658-6080 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
