Murder-suicide in Convent: Baby and man found dead after car chase, state police say

Authorities said the man led them on a chase that ended in St. James Parish.

ST. JAMES PARISH, La. — A father and his one-year-old are dead. Authorities said the dad shot the child before taking his own life. This happened on Wednesday evening in St. James Parish.

Louisiana State Police said it was a pursuit that ended at St. Mary's Cemetery in Convent in a murder-suicide. WWL Louisiana's Lily Cummings has the timeline from authorities.

St. James Sheriff's Office said the child's mother called them around 4 p.m. asking for a welfare check on the child and his dad. She told authorities they were driving in an unknown area.

An hour later, the car was spotted in Ascension Parish. According to LSP, Gonzales Police and Ascension Parish deputies pursued the vehicle to St. James Parish just before 5 p.m.

By 5:30 p.m., state police were called to Convent. That's where authorities found the 23-year-old man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his one-year-old son.

The father was taken to the hospital where he later died.

State police have taken over the investigation. Identities have not been released.
