Married couple who beat and tortured man in Kenner get more than 10 years in prison

Wife Mishanda Reed, 45, was sentenced to 11 years and husband Malcolm Reed, 43, was sentenced to 13 years.

KENNER, La. — A married couple who kidnapped, beat, and tortured a Houston man in Kenner were sentenced to more than 10 years for the meet up that turned violent in an Airbnb in 2021.

Mishanda Reed, 45, was found guilty of attempted second-degree kidnapping. Her husband, Malcolm Reed, 43, was also found guilty of second-degree kidnapping but faces another charge of simple battery, according to our partners at Nola.com.

During Mishanda Reed's sentencing hearing on Oct.20 hoping for a new trial, she told the court that she was "afraid of her husband and didn't willingly participate in the attack", the District Attorney's Office told Nola.com

Judge Shayna Beevers Morvant did not agree with Mishanda Reed's statements, saying she had multiple chances to leave her husband if she wasn't scheming with him.

The man and Mishanda Reed were college sweethearts and arranged to meet up on June 27, 2021 reported Nola.com

According to police, the man was zip-tied to a chair and interrogated over his relationship with Mishanda Reed and beaten over a period of several hours. Police described the attack as brutal, with Malcolm Reed using an aluminum bat, a gun, and a knife. The victim suffered a broken leg, a broken arm, and several injuries to his face.

Police said that after the beating, the victim was dumped out on the road at the intersection of Richard Wilson Boulevard and Alliance Street where a good Samaritan called for help.

The couple was convicted on Sept.28 this year for second-degree kidnapping and arrested in Durhan, North Carolina.

Morvant denied Mishanda Reed's motion for a new trial and Malcolm Reed's motion to reconsider his sentence.
