One dead after car falls off elevated expressway in Marrero, state police say

Troopers said the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected out of the car, and died on the scene.

MARRERO, La. — One person is dead after a car crashed and fell off elevated expressway US 90B in Marrero, according to Louisiana State Police Troop B.

The crash happened on Sunday around 5 a.m. near Gaudet Drive. State police said a 2001 Honda Civic was traveling on the upper level of the expressway when the driver lost control and crashed into a guardrail.

When the car hit the guardrail it continued and "fell to the lower level of US 90B ", the release said.

Troopers said the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected out of the car, and died on the scene.

The identity of the passenger is unknown at this time "pending notification to next of kin", state police said.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital and suffered moderate injuries.

State police said a routine toxicology sample was collected and submitted for analysis.
