MANDEVILLE, La. — A Slidell man was shot and later arrested after he was caught trespassing near a Mandeville home and attacking one of the homeowners, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
Careyunius Smith was arrested following the shooting incident in the 1200 block of Dove Park Road on Monday, Jul. 29 around 9 a.m. Deputies said they received a call that a man was shot and needed emergency personnel.
When deputies arrived, the homeowners said they saw Smith near their garage and when one of the homeowners confronted him " Smith charged and attacked the homeowner", the release said.
The first homeowner who was attacked fought with Smith and yelled for the second homeowner's help who came outside and begged for Smith to stop., according to the sheriff's office.
When Smith refused to let go of the first homeowner, the second homeowner went inside and "armed himself with a firearm", asking Smith to stop again.
That's when the sheriff's office said Smith tried to attack the second homeowner but out of "fear for his life and the life of the other homeowner" they shot Smith in the abdomen, deputies said.
Smith was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.
Investigators with the sheriff's office said they believe the homeowner who shot Smith was acting in self-defense.
Smith is charged with Criminal Trespassing, Attempted Simple Kidnapping, Simple Battery, and Simple Assault. Upon release from the hospital, he will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Facility.
