As police search for accused Slidell-area bar shooter, a family is left to mourn

"I know when I came up, we had a little fist fight for a few minutes, then we'd go sit down and talk it over and drink," one neighbor said.

SLIDELL, La. — Everything was quiet Sunday morning outside of Gloria's Bar near Slidell.

But hours earlier, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputy filled the parking lot to investigate a homicide.

Investigators say Jules Johnson, 30, fired the shot that killed 43-year-old Melvin Webb. Johnson is now wanted as the lone suspect in the case and is considered armed and dangerous.

The shooting happened about 1:30 a.m. outside of the bar at the end of Salmen Street, where one of the rules is no weapons. It's a quiet and secluded area near Slidell.

When deputies arrived, they found the man, identified by the parish coroner as Webb, with a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Lesprance Batiste has lived in the area for years. He said he can't imagine what led to the shooting, and investigators have not yet identified a motive.

“Shooting him in the face. I mean, it kind of got to me at first. I don't know what the man could've did to have shot him in the face," Batiste said.

Most neighbors Eyewitness News talked to were too afraid to go on camera to talk about what happened at Gloria's last night. But there's a mixture of emotions about the place. Some neighbors say it's a quiet gathering spot. Others describe it as a nuisance.

Batiste says people are too quick to pull out a gun these days.

"I know when I came up, we had a little fist fight for a few minutes, then we'd go sit down and talk it over and drink," Batiste said.

Now, a family is left to mourn its loved one, and neighbors are left to wonder what led to the violence.

Johnson is wanted on an arrest warrant for second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the killing.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to call the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office at (985)898-2338.
