HAMMOND, La. — The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of one man over the weekend.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards says on Saturday, deputies responded to a vehicle crash on Bankston Road in Hammond at about 11:30 p.m.

The crash happened near the Copper Hill Subdivision and claimed the life of an unidentified Hispanic male whom EMS pronounced dead on scene.

The sheriff's office says the investigation revealed that the 2005 Jeep Liberty was involved in a hit-and-run incident in the area before the fatal crash.

After fleeing the scene and for reasons still unknown, the vehicle left the roadway and traveled into the backyard of a residence striking multiple fences.

Investigators did not give further details about the condition or identity of the victim in the hit-and-run.

At this time, the crash is still under investigation by the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Team.

Sheriff Edwards asks anyone with information on this incident to contact Lieutenant Mike Moore at 985-902-2071.
