HOUMA, La. — A man died after attempting to swallow bags of drugs during a traffic stop in Houma on Friday.
Houma Police said they pulled over a man on Highway 3040 at Grinage Street around 5 a.m. for an equipment violation. Officers said the man resisted arrest and tried to run away, but an officer used their taser to stop him.
Once the driver was in the back of the police car, he tried to fill his mouth with bags of what the department said they believe are narcotics.
Houma Police said they took the driver out the car when he soon became unresponsive. Officers said they tried to help him and paramedics were called to the scene.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.
Louisiana State Police said they are actively investigating the in-custody death.
