NEW ORLEANS — Police are searching for a New Orleans criminal defendant who authorities say cut off his electronic ankle monitor Tuesday night, tossing the ankle bracelet into a trash can in the CBD before disappearing.
Romaley Loring, 26, bolted after a brief cat-and-mouse exchange with the ankle monitoring company that had been tracking him since he made bail on the condition of home incarceration and monitoring.
Loring, awaiting trial on charges of felon with a firearm, drug possession, and illegal carrying of a weapon with narcotics, was supposed to be confined to his home in New Orleans East when the monitoring company, ASAP, received notice of a bracelet tamper at about 7 p.m. Tuesday, ASAP co-owner Matt Dennis said.
After contacting Loring, Dennis said his agents told Loring to report to the ASAP office near the criminal courthouse. As the agents tracked Loring heading in the direction of the court, he suddenly took a detour into the CBD, where the severed bracelet was found in a trash can on Baronne Street, Dennis said.
Court records show that a magistrate court commissioner had been alerted to a previous violation by Loring, but when he returned to court he was released with a warning.
Loring has a long criminal history, including multiple drug convictions that landed him in the drug court program at New Orleans Criminal Court. Loring was released from jail in September after posting a $62,500 bail, records show.
Police say he is known to frequent the New Orleans East area. If you see him or know his whereabouts, the NOPD asks you to call 911.
