Man arrested for killing Marrero dad during fight with girlfriend, JPSO deputies say

Family members said 51-year-old Taj Laurent was a loving husband and grandfather of six.

HARVEY, La. — A man was arrested for second degree murder and obstruction of justice, after shooting his girlfriend's father on Christmas Day.

JPSO identified the suspect as 23-year-old Talvis Keller, who shot and killed 51-year-old Taj Laurent, who was trying to defuse a domestic disturbance between Keller and his daughter. The shooting happened inside a unit at Westchase Apartments in the 1000 block of Manhattan Boulevard in Harvey.

After obtaining an arrest warrant, deputies arrested Keller on Tuesday at a motel in Gretna. Along with Keller, Vernada Charles, 21 and Kentrone Robinson, 21, were also booked at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center for being accessories to the second degree murder after the fact.

Our partners at Nola.com said Laurent's daughter found Keller with another woman, but when she asked him to leave he refused, leading to an argument.

Laurent, his son Taj Laurent Jr., and wife went to the apartment to calm things down. Taj Laurent Jr., told Nola.com things took a turn when he heard a gunshot come from inside the apartment.

Family members said Laurent was a loving husband and grandfather of six. Nola.com spoke to Taj Laurent Jr. who said, "he took my father away from us."

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said the investigation remains active and no additional information on Keller's release is available at this time.
