NEW ORLEANS — On Tuesday, New Orleans Police arrested 20-year-old Rahkeem Kenner in connection to a deadly shootout.
The shooting occurred Monday just after 4:00 PM off of St. Claude near Henriette Delille and Saint Anthony Streets.
Court documents show a 33-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, later identified by the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office as Kendall Hains, was transported to the hospital where he later died.
Detectives were then informed that two more victims arrived at University Medical Center, including Kenner who refused to speak to detectives, the documents said.
After reviewing video evidence of the scene, police arrested Kenner for second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
Kenner's arrest affidavit shows Louisiana State Police were actively investigating a different incident that involved the pinging of a cellphone that belonged to Kenner. The phone was found in a vehicle at the crime scene.
Residents of the Seventh Ward said they're scared to live in the area. You don't have to look far to see a bullet hole.
"They say crime is under control, but I don’t believe it is," Darryl Plains said.
Willie Adams owns a business near the crime scene and lives in the Seventh Ward.
"We in the shop and we are ducking on the floor like we in Vietnam somewhere," Adams said.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell was asked about the crime at an unrelated press conference on Tuesday.
“Any incidents of violent crime in the City of New Orleans will always be concerning, but the New Orleans Police Department will remain, again, engaged and on the street and on the ground to ensure that our public is safe," Cantrell said.
But residents said they want to see more proactive policing.
“When things happen, it’s too late," Plains said.
“This is horrible. It’s horrible, but ain’t nothing being done about it," Adams said.
Another shooting happened minutes earlier, less than a mile away, near Claiborne Avenue and Elysian Fields.
In total, five people were shot in the two incidents, including Kenner and the man who died, police said.
Kenner had his first appearance in court Tuesday afternoon. His bond was set at $1.25 million.
Kenner had previous illegal weapons and drug charges. He was out on bond awaiting a trial this January, according to court records.
