HAMMOND, La. — A crash in Hammond on Friday night left a man dead, according to the Louisiana State Police. Troopers said the crash claimed the life of 81-year-old Charles Baglio Jr. of Independence.
According to WBRZ, Baglio Jr. was a former LSU staffer and longtime football coach for Independence High School.
He coached at the highschool for 34 years and worked at LSU as a coordinator of football relations in 2002.
State police said two crashes happened that night and Baglio was struck by a truck in the second crash on US Hwy 51. The accidents were minutes apart around 8:10 p.m. at Kohnke Hill Road.
The first crash happened when Baglio, who drove a 2025 Nissan Altima headed eastbound, entered the intersection in the path of a 2016 Nissan traveling southbound. Baglio was hit by the 2016 Nissan and the car landed in a ditch.
Troopers said that before emergency personnel arrived, Baglio had left his car to "check on the driver in the northbound ditch of US Hwy 51," a release said.
As he walked away from the shoulder back to his car, a 2001 Toyota Tundra struck Baglio.
State police said he suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota was not wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured. "Impairment is not suspected on the part of the Toyota driver who provided a breath sample of .000g%," LSP said.
