14-year-old ordered to wear ankle monitor after school threat to 'shoot everyone', sheriff says

A Thibodaux High School student was charged with cyberbullying and ordered to wear an ankle monitor after threatening to bring a gun to school last month.

THIBODAUX, La. — A Thibodaux High School student was charged with cyberbullying and ordered to wear an ankle monitor after threatening to bring a gun to school last month, according to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Craig Webre said a 14-year-old boy said he had a gun and threatened to bring it to the school and "shoot everyone", a release said. Detectives said the incident happened on Sunday, Sept. 22 and the threat came from a group message on SnapChat.

Initially, detectives thought the threat came from another male student, but the message came from the 14-year-old boy.

The teen was charged with violating Louisiana Revised Statutes (Cyberbullying) and False Swearing for the Purpose of Violating Public Health and Safety.

Sheriff Webre cautions parents to speak to their children about this incident.

“Technology has made it very easy to try to impersonate someone else, but it also makes it easy to track down the true perpetrator,” said Webre. “This is not a joke, a prank, or a game. All threats are taken very seriously, and there are serious consequences. Be sure your children understand that once you send a message, you can’t take it back.”
