THIBODAUX, La. — The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a mass shooting that injured nine people Sunday night in Thibodaux.
Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office spokesperson Captain Brennan Matherne confirms that seven people were injured by gunfire in the shooting that happened at a party around 9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Hyland Drive in the Marydale neighborhood.
In addition to the gunshot victims, two women were also injured in the chaos resulting from the shooting.
"Investigators identified a total of seven people shot and injured. Those victims ranged in age from 17 to 25 years of age," The sheriff's office said in a press release Monday morning. "Another two females, ages 21 and 22, suffered injuries as the crowd was running from the scene. All nine injured were transported to hospitals for treatment."
Neighbors say the large gathering was a graduation party.
Diane Tyler, whose granddaughter was one of the Thibodaux High School graduates celebrating at the party says the gunfire came without warning.
“Everybody was having a good time, and everybody heard gunshots, we didn't. We didn't see none of that,” Tyler says.
“We just heard gunshots she was right there, bullets going away. You know, people that have been getting out I know that. They're gonna have to get down on the floor to keep from getting shot.”
The sheriff’s office says no one was killed and no arrests have been made in the shooting.
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre says deputies and detectives are gathering evidence to find who is responsible for the shooting.
