MANDEVILLE, La. — A man has been arrested after he broke into a Mandeville wielding a knife at the homeowner.

“At approximately 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, a homeowner in the 2000 block of Labarre Street near Mandeville was awakened by the sound of his glass front door shattering,” the St Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a report.

The homeowner then found an unknown man, later identified as Jacques Dutel, inside the home and holding what appeared to be a knife. Dutel fled the residence on foot after the homeowner confronted the intruder.

He was located a short time later by St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputies at another home 2000 block of Destin Street where he was staying.

Dutel was arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on a charge of Home Invasion.

“This could have ended very badly, I want to applaud and thank the patrol deputies involved and the detectives with our Major Crimes Division for identifying and arresting this perpetrator so quickly,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “They are truly the best of the best and St. Tammany is lucky to have such trained and dedicated deputies and investigators serving the people of our great parish.”
