JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has issued an arrest warrant for the man who was shot following a parade in Marrero earlier this month.

A deputy shot 59-year-old Ernest Sam after he allegedly drove towards the deputy in a parking lot not long after the Mystic Krewe of Music parade on February 5.

The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. in the parking lot of a business in the 5900 block of Lapalco Boulevard.

JPSO's Sgt. Brandon Veal told WWL Louisiana that Sam is wanted for driving while intoxicated.

According to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, Sam was struck in the shoulder with a single shot during the incident, which involved the man allegedly attempting to exit through an unauthorized portion of the parking lot where the deputy was positioned. Sam then allegedly proceeded over a curb and approached the deputy in the vehicle while refusing to stop despite the deputy instructing him to do so.

"Clearly the car was moving forward right at our deputy and caused her to react," claimed Lopinto during a media briefing shortly after the incident.

WWL Louisiana obtained surveillance video from a nearby business that captured the incident.
