JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — One person is dead after a crash in Metairie on Friday afternoon, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. on the 3100 block of N. Causeway Blvd., when a Ford Mustang struck a Hyundai Sonata, Sheriff Joseph Lopinto reported.

Witnesses said the driver of the Mustang lost control of the car while exiting a parking lot and went onto the road.

The Mustang "crossed the southbound lanes of N. Causeway Blvd., went over the median, and struck the Sonata in the northbound lanes," a release said.

Both of the drivers were taken to the hospital for their injuries. Deputies said the driver of the Sonata died at the hospital hours after being treated.

The sheriff's office said the driver of the Mustang suffered non-life-threatening injuries and a blood sample was taken due to the severity of the crash.

The identity of the individual who drove the Sonata is being withheld pending notification to next of kin.
