JACKSON, Miss — Daniel Callihan faces a federal charge of felony kidnapping and is set to appear in court next week. Callihan is accused of killing Callie Brunett in Loranger, La., abducting her two children, and killing her 3-year-old daughter in Jackson, MS.
According to court records, Callihan, 36, was in court Monday, June 17, and currently is only facing one federal charge for now of felony kidnapping.
Callihan is set to be back in court next week on Tuesday, June 25. Last week on Friday, Callihan admitted to the murder of Callie's 3-year-old Erin Brunett and said that he deserves the death penalty.
Executions in Louisiana and Mississippi, both states where Daniel Callihan is facing murder charges is not a quick process.
In Mississippi, there are 35 inmates on death row. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, there are just over 60 in Louisiana.
The last execution in Louisiana was in 2010, in Miss. it was more recent, in 2022.
Callihan is facing murder charges in both states for the deaths of Callie and Erin Brunett.
While some investigators in this case are not opposed to Callihan being executed, his sister said it's the easy way out.
"I think he should rot in prison," said Callihan's sister Dixie Hemphill. "I think he should get what he's been asking for. He shouldn't be able to ever hurt another human life, not a grown-up, not a child, not nobody because he will and he'll find excuses."
"And this is the thing, he'll get away with it. This is just a time that he got caught and he didn't think he was gonna get caught," she said.
Police Chief Joseph Wade from Jackson, Miss., said "If there's a case that would definitely rise to the level of the death penalty, this should be it." "Because I still have imprinted in my head the sight of that four-year-old in the woods dead."
The FBI has taken over the investigation.
