KENNER, La. — An ice cream truck driver charged with crashing into a Kenner apartment and killing a 12-year-old boy pled not guilty in a Jefferson Parish court on Friday.
According to NOLA.com, Mechaul Mansoor, 71, appeared in court on Oct. 24 after he had been charged with negligent homicide.
Adrian Flores, 12, had been playing video games in the living room when the crash happened. Kenner police said that Mansoor ran a stop sign and drove straight into where Flores lived.
Flores died six days after the crash, he had been brought to the ICU with a fractured skull and broken bones. His family had made the selfless decision to donate Flores' organs after the 12-year-old had been declared brain dead.
The damage to the apartment left the victim's family homeless, according to a GoFundMe page made shortly after Flores had entered the hospital in May.
"We as a family are heartbroken, but we know Adrian is an angel that came to this world to spend time with us for a short time," a post on the GoFundMe page from Adrian's family said. "He goes to heaven a hero in our eyes because he is giving the best gift that can be on this earth, the gift of life through becoming an organ donor."
Mansoor is free on a $100,000 bond, NOLA.com said. Negligent homicide is punishable by a maximum sentence of five years.
