LAFAYETTE, La. — A high school student was shot and killed Friday while getting off the school bus in Lafayette, according to Nola.com.
Deputies identified the student as 18-year-old Jaylon Joiner, who attended Carencro High and was shot in the 200 block of Bradford Drive around 3 p.m.
Joiner was taken to a hospital where he later died, Nola.com reported.
Lafayette sheriff's office said they believe several suspects were involved in the shooting and they were able to detain one person for questioning.
"The Lafayette Parish School System is deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our students this afternoon and our hearts go out to the Carencro community," LPSS public information officer Amanda Blanco said in a statement Friday evening.
According to our partners, Blanco said the bus driver was unharmed and additional details "would not be released because minors were involved."
She said the school system will reach out to the families at Carencro High before students return to school Monday.
Additional counselors and other supportive services will be available to students next week.
