Police chase in Mississippi leads to Louisiana State Police, JPSO, SWAT standoff, arrest in Marrero

State Police have apparently handcuffed the suspect who led troopers on a chase from Mississippi to Jefferson Parish.

MARRERO, La. — The suspect who led police on a chase from Mississippi through New Orleans and into Jefferson Parish was eventually handcuffed Monday afternoon after an hours long standoff, according to State Troopers.

The suspect had barricaded himself inside of a vehicle in a parking lot in Marrero after leading police on a chase that started in Pearl River County, Miss., and went through the city and across the Crescent City Connection Monday morning.

"We became involved in the pursuit shortly before 6 this morning," Louisiana State Police Sgt. Kate Stegall said Monday afternoon. "Shortly before 6:30 tire deflation devices were used on the upper-level near Barataria, those were actually successful, but he continued driving."

After the chase ended law enforcement spent about 8 hours negotiating the suspect's arrest.

"Around 6:45 or 6:50 was when we ended at this location," Sgt. Kate Stegall said. "He ran into a brick wall with his vehicle, and we had been in negotiation with him since then, so it's been quite sometime

According to WWL Louisiana reporter Alyssa Curtis police stopped traffic coming off the Westbank Expressway into Marrero at St. Anne Street.

State Police Trooper Xavier Marten said the incident started with a traffic stop in Pearl River County. Marten had not said why the car was pulled over, but the trooper said that after making the stop, officers noticed a large gun in the car and asked the man to get out of the car.

He apparently refused a search and sped off, starting a chase that went through Pearl River County, St. Tammany Parish, Orleans Parish and ended in Jefferson Parish, when officers were able to deploy tire deflation devices that disabled the suspect's vehicle.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police SWAT units, K-9 units, and Westwego police were all on the scene of the standoff.

The suspect will now likely face charges in both Mississippi and Louisiana. He was transferred to a nearby hospital after he was put into custody.

"From the time that we became involved in that pursuit, there will be Louisiana charges that apply," Louisiana State Police Sgt. Stegall said.
