Police shoot at suspect who tried to hit them with a vehicle in Gretna

Police said that "no one was struck by gunfire."

GRETNA, La. — Two Gretna police officers shot at a man who tried to hit them with a vehicle during a police chase on Monday.

Shots were fired after officers tried to stop 29-year-old Ronald Thomas at 5th Street and Holly Drive for having a counterfeit license plate. Police say Thomas refused to stop, so the officer began to chase him.

Police said that "no one was struck by gunfire."

According to police, Thomas went down Fredrichs Street, which is a dead end, and made a U-tum.

While Thomas was trying to turn around, he got stuck on a parking bumper. The officer who was chasing him got out of his unit and ordered Thomas to get out.

While that was happening, a second officer also arrived at the scene

Thomas made it over the parking bumper and tried to ram the second officer's unit and then backed and tried
to hit the other officer. This is when both officers shot at Thomas

Thomas then drove back up Friedrichs St. and crashed, trying to turn on O'Connor St.

After crashing, he tried to run away, but he was caught by a K-9. Thomas was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Thomas was charged with the following:

  • Attempted first-degree murder
  • Aggravated assault with a motor vehicle upon a peace officer
  • Aggravated flight from an officer
  • Resisting an officer
  • Hit and run
  • Numerous traffic charges
