Man held on $20M bond after alleged murder of woman in New Orleans East

Eric Gentris, 35, was booked on one count of second-degree murder after being transferred from Lafayette Parish.

NEW ORLEANS — The man who was arrested after the alleged murder of a woman at an apartment complex in New Orleans East had his bond set at $20 million, according to Nola.com.

Eric Gentris, 35, was booked on one count of second-degree murder after being transferred from Lafayette Parish, our partners reported.

He is accused of killing 25-year-old Katelyn Howard near the corner of Bridgehampton and Suffolk Drives around 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Police arrested Gentris in Scott, LA on Wednesday night after a multi-jurisdictional vehicle pursuit. They said he was armed and had his 4-year-old daughter with him.

According to court records, Howard and Gentris were in a years-long relationship with a violent past.

Just months before Howard’s murder, Gentris was arrested for allegedly breaking into her home and pushing her against the wall.

“While it would not be prudent to comment on the specifics of this case due to the ongoing prosecution," DA Jason Williams said in a statement. "The public record indicates that prior to this homicide, during his last court appearance, this individual was rated a level 5 out of 6 risk for new criminal activity by the risk assessment tool used by the court to set bail."
